What are the functions of Chipset in the computer motherboard?
1. Chipset
- North Bridge: In traditional motherboard architecture, the North Bridge is responsible for connecting the CPU and high-speed devices, such as memory and graphics cards. It determines the type of CPU, memory type and frequency, and graphics card interface specifications that the motherboard can support. For example, a motherboard that supports an Intel Core i7 processor will have a North Bridge chip that is optimized for the characteristics of the processor, including providing a high enough memory bandwidth to match the CPU's processing speed. The North Bridge also controls the AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) or PCI-E (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) interface for connecting high-performance discrete graphics cards to achieve high-quality graphics processing. However, in modern motherboard designs, some of the functions of the North Bridge have been integrated into the CPU, and this architecture is called a single-chipset architecture.
- South Bridge: The South Bridge is mainly responsible for connecting low-speed devices. It manages various interfaces on the motherboard, such as the SATA (Serial ATA) interface, which is used to connect storage devices such as hard drives and optical drives. The SATA interface can achieve high-speed data transmission and supports different SATA standards (such as SATA 3.0, etc.) to meet users' requirements for storage device read and write speeds. The South Bridge chip also controls the USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface, including different versions of interfaces such as USB 2.0, USB 3.0, and USB 3.1, which are used to connect external devices such as printers, mobile hard drives, mice, keyboards, etc., providing a convenient channel for communication between computers and external devices. In addition, the South Bridge chip also involves the management of audio controllers, network controllers, etc., such as supporting the functions of integrated sound cards and network cards, and providing basic sound input/output and network connection functions.
